Stirrup Leathers for Comfort and Control in the Saddle

Modern Technology and Premium Quality

Whether during dressage training or a relaxed trail ride – stirrup leathers serve as the connecting element between your saddle and the stirrups, providing the necessary stability in your seat, even during sudden movements of your horse. Only when your leathers fit perfectly can you apply your aids precisely and sensitively.

With millimeter-precise length adjustment, you can tailor the leathers individually to your leg length and riding style. This is a crucial advantage if you frequently switch between dressage and jumping or share the horse with someone else. When choosing, be sure to select tear-resistant yet flexible material. Only then will the leathers withstand high stress, such as during posting trot or over jumps.

Many riders swear by high-quality leather, while others prefer modern high-tech materials that are particularly durable and easy to care for. Regardless of your choice, good craftsmanship makes the difference. Only then will there be no uncomfortable pressure points on your thighs that could noticeably reduce comfort in the saddle.

The right length and suitable material contribute not only to your own safety but also to your horse’s well-being – because a balanced seat positively affects your aids. If you value quality, functionality, and a pleasant riding experience, well-chosen stirrup leathers are a must-have in your equipment.

Materials and Their Properties

There are different types of stirrup leathers:

  • Classic stirrup leathers made of leather, synthetic materials, or faux leather
  • Mono stirrup leathers made of leather, synthetic materials, or faux leather

Stirrup leathers are one of the most important parts of your riding equipment. You need them to attach the stirrups to the saddle. Stirrup leathers come in various colors and materials such as leather, synthetic leather, nylon, or plastic. Ideally, choose a color that matches your saddle for a cohesive look.

Classic stirrup leathers are looped through the stirrup and then threaded through the stirrup bar on the saddle. They are fastened using a buckle at the hole for your desired length. The buckle is pulled up to the stirrup bar so it doesn’t interfere while riding. Any excess strap is secured in the keeper on the saddle flap, so it won’t get in your way.

Mono stirrup leathers, also known as short stirrup leathers, are particularly popular among Icelandic and trail riders. They consist of a single strap with a loop that attaches to the stirrup bar. The strap is threaded through the stirrup and secured with a T-bar after forming a short loop. This results in only one strap along the thigh, reducing bulk and pressure.

On some saddles, stirrup leathers can be buckled underneath the saddle flap, which protects the leather and prevents the strap from rubbing against your thigh. Mono stirrup leathers are often buckled beneath the flap to avoid discomfort on long rides and to protect the saddle flap.

Precisely Adjustable for Every Rider

The length of stirrup leathers you need depends on your height and the type of saddle you use. Stirrup leathers are available in lengths from 120 to 180 cm. For an average-sized rider, lengths of 130 to 145 cm for jumping saddles and 150 to 165 cm for dressage saddles are usually sufficient. If you are shorter than 1.60 m, you’ll likely need leathers between 135 and 145 cm. If you’re taller than 1.80 m, you should consider stirrup leathers with a length of 180 cm.

For children, stirrup leathers between 120 cm and 130 cm are suitable.

Mono stirrup leathers are available in lengths from 60 to 80 cm. The right length also depends on your height.

Stirrup leathers come in widths ranging from 2 to 5 cm. The most commonly used are 2.5 cm wide. Depending on your weight and riding discipline, narrower or wider stirrup leathers may be more suitable.

Good to Know Topic: Fit

Fit for Horse and Rider

You can find the right stirrup length by holding the stirrup up to your armpit with your arm fully extended before mounting—this gives you a rough estimate of the needed leather length. After mounting, you can fine-tune the length while sitting in the saddle. In dressage, the stirrup should hang at ankle height when your leg dangles loosely from the hip. This allows you to absorb movement easily with a bent leg and stay balanced while rising or sitting the trot.

For jumping, shorten the stirrups by 3 to 5 holes compared to your dressage length so that your bent legs rest comfortably against the knee rolls, allowing you to shift smoothly into a light seat. In eventing, riders shorten their stirrups another 1 to 2 holes for the cross-country phase, which helps achieve a secure position even more effectively.

Riding Disciplines and the Right Leathers

Our saddlery will find the perfect solution for you

Classic stirrup leathers can be used with all English saddles, whether it's a dressage, jumping, or all-purpose saddle. For saddles with mono flaps—such as Icelandic saddles, trail saddles, or Spanish saddles—mono stirrup leathers are used to prevent the saddle flap from being scratched by the stirrup buckle.

It's best to consult your saddler to determine which stirrup leathers are right for your saddle. In our in-house saddlery, we’re happy to advise you on all saddle-related questions, fit the saddle to your horse, and show you the stirrup leathers that work best for your setup.

Durability and Care in Focus

If you want to attach your stirrups to the saddle, you should not only consider fit and function, but also the durability of the materials used. High-quality models retain their shape even with daily riding and offer lasting strength for a secure seat. If you opt for leather straps, be sure to clean and condition them regularly using special cleaners and nourishing products to keep them supple and prevent drying out. For those who prefer a more practical option, nylon or soft versions are a great choice. They can simply be rinsed with water and are ready to use again right away.

Another important aspect is the metal components: rustproof materials or sealed buckles provide reliable protection against corrosion and significantly extend the lifespan of your riding equipment. Also check for smooth edges – they help prevent early wear and ensure the straps don’t develop cracks even with intensive use. In general, low-maintenance yet robust stirrup leathers are ideal for daily use or demanding training sessions. If you want to enjoy your gear for the long term, carefully chosen materials and a little maintenance make all the difference.

Stirrup Leathers in Equestrian Sports

Often underestimated in everyday training, stirrup leathers combine modern technology, thoughtful comfort and a high level of safety in a single piece of equipment. They come in various lengths, materials, and designs, allowing you to find the right model for any riding discipline – whether dressage, jumping or trail. What matters most is that the leathers support your position and contribute to a consistently comfortable seat without restricting your movement.

Thanks to their special construction, they ensure a stable connection between your leg and the stirrup, which has a positive effect on your aids, especially in dynamic gaits. In the long run, investing in high-quality craftsmanship and functional materials pays off – they not only last longer, but also enhance your overall riding experience.
